DBS checks for private tutors

DBS eligibility and suitability can depend on the nature, frequency, location, and supervision of tutoring work. Families and tutors should seek appropriate guidance where needed.

What a DBS badge means

A DBS self-declared badge means the tutor has stated information about DBS status. A DBS seen by TuitionList badge means an admin has marked DBS evidence as seen. Neither label means TuitionList recommends or guarantees the tutor.

Ask to see relevant evidence

Parents and carers may wish to ask the tutor to show relevant DBS certificate details, identity documents, references, qualifications, and safeguarding arrangements before tuition begins.

Directory-only position

TuitionList does not guarantee that a tutor is legally required to hold a particular DBS check in every circumstance and does not accept responsibility for tutor suitability.

Directory-only reminder

TuitionList is a directory only. Tutors and tuition providers listed on TuitionList are independent and are not employed by TuitionList. We do not guarantee the quality, suitability, availability, qualifications, DBS status, safeguarding arrangements, or outcomes of any tutor. Parents, carers, and students are responsible for carrying out their own checks before arranging tuition.

Where possible, TuitionList may review certain information or evidence provided by tutors and tuition providers. Badges, blue ticks, and profile labels only show what has been self-declared, seen, or confirmed by TuitionList.
